Significance & Heritage

The Beginning
of a New Era

Gifaataa is a deeply meaningful cultural festival celebrated by the Wolayta people of southern Ethiopia. More than a celebration, it marks a profound moment of transition—Gifaataa literally means "the beginning" and symbolizes the passage from old to new, from darkness to light, and from one cycle of life to the next.

UNESCO Recognition: Recently, Gifaataa gained global recognition by being officially inscribed as a world heritage, affirming its cultural, historical, and spiritual importance not only to the Wolayta people but to humanity as a whole.

One of the most striking elements of Gifaataa is the traditional attire worn during the celebrations: Dinguza. This traditional custom is an essential part of the festival, where men and women wear Dinguza to honor their ancestors, express unity, and visibly connect the present generation with their cultural roots.

The attire is made from traditional fabrics and designs that carry symbolic meaning tied to Wolayta history and social life. Importantly, Dinguza itself is also inscribed in UNESCO documentation, alongside Gifaataa, as part of the recognized traditional customs.

In a rapidly changing world, Gifaataa stands as a powerful reminder that cultural heritage is not something frozen in time, but something lived, worn, and renewed—year after year—by the people who carry it forward.
